Manufacturer: IKO INDUSTRIES LTD.
Contact Address: See Membership List in Section 1.
Product Group: APP MODIFIED BITUMINOUS MEMBRANES
Country of Origin: Belgium
Country of Manufacture: Canada
- Year First Installed
- B.C.: 1985
- Canada: 1985
1 Description
IKO ARMOURPLAST membranes consist of a polyester or fibreglass mat impregnated on both sides with an APP (atactic polypropylene) modified bitumen compound. The non-woven polyester fabric used in ARMOURPLAST membranes provides a highly elastic body with excellent tensile strength. The high percentage of plasticizing resins in the bitumen compound ensure heat resistance, low temperature flexibility, aging endurance and workability.
The ARMOURPLAST membranes are heat welded to prepared surfaces. The seams are fused, forming a single, continuous watertight membrane.
1.1 GENERAL
- The roofing assembly / material information published in the RCABC Roofing Practices Manual does NOT represent a complete set of the manufacturer's published data, nor does it represent a detailed specification. The preparation of a detailed specification is the responsibility of the design authority.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
- .1 Torch-on roofing membrane: consists of an oxidized base ply and cap sheet, separately applied using a proprietary propane torch. Over flame sensitive substrates base sheets are mopped-on or nailed-on or torched over underlay; apply to any prepared roof deck or insulation.
- .2 Range of application: new or re-roofing; from dead-flat to vertical (consult IKO INDUSTRIES LTD.)
DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
- .1 Store ARMOURPLAST rolls on a pallet, standing upright on the end opposite the salvage edge, securely covered to protect from moisture.
- .2 Below O° (+32°F): keep rolls in a heated area; install at once without allowing to become cold; do not drop rolls when cold.
SITE CONDITIONS
- .1 Slope limitations:
- - minimum recommended slope 1:50 (1/4" in 12")
- - mechanical fastening required over 1:16 (3/4" in 12")
- - consult IKO INDUSTRIES LTD. for slopes 1:4 (3" in 12")
- .2 Application Temperature:
- - minimum ambient temperature + 4°C (+ 40°F)
- - maximum ambient temperature +38°C (+100°F)
- .3 Chemical incompatibilities: generally those that affect roofing asphalt.
STANDARDS AND APPROVAL (for specific membranes or assemblies consult manufacturer):
- .1 Canadian General Standards Board: CGSB 37-GP-56M
MANUFACTURER'S SERVICES
- .1 Field technicians are available to advise and assist contractors.
- .2 Specifications / Drawings: available from specification manual or custom designed to customer requirements.
- .3 Seminars: presented on a yearly basis or on request.
1.2 MATERIALS
NOTE: Regardless of the materials listed below or anywhere else in these manufacturer's guidelines, only materials accepted for use in the RoofStar Guarantee Program, or accessories associated with those materials, may be used to qualify for a RoofStar Guarantee. - .9 Gravel Ballast: (for protected and modified protected membrane assemblies); clean, washed round stone, 25 mm (1") clear size; no stones less than 15 mm (5/8") or larger than 35 mm (1-3/8"); most stones 20 mm to 38 mm (3/4" to 1-1/4") in size).
- .10 Roofing Asphalt: conforming to CSA A123.4-M Type 3 for slopes up to 1:8 (1-1/2" in 12"); conforming to ASTM D312 Type IV for slopes 1:8 (1-1/2" in 12") to 1:4 (3" in 12").
1.3 EXECUTION
PREPARATION
- .1 Ensure surfaces are smooth, dry, clean, and free of sharp projections and depressions.
INSULATION
- .1 Mechanically fasten insulation over nailable decks in accordance with RGC Guarantee Standards.
- .2 Embed insulation in a 1.5 kg / meters squared (30 lb / square) mopping of hot asphalt over non-nailable decks.
- .3 Install 11 mm (7/16") asphalt impregnated fibreboard as an insulation overlay where required by RGC Guarantee Standards.
- .4 Install wood nailing strips on slopes exceeding 1:12 (1" in 12")
BASE SHEET (where required)
- .1 Start at low point and at right angles to the slope.
- .2 Mechanically fasten base sheet to deck according to IKO INDUSTRIES LTD's recommended fastening pattern.
TORCH APPLIED ROOF MEMBRANE
- .1 Start at low point and at right angles to the slope, or in same direction as base sheet; for two ply applications the first ply is applied parallel to the base and to the top ply.
- .2 Unroll 1.2 m to 2.0 m (4' to 6') and align membrane.
- .3 Torch to suitable substrate, with proprietary propane torch, directing flame to the exposed surface of the roll as well as to the deck or membrane underneath.
- .4 Lap sides 88.9 mm (3-1/2") and ends 150 mm (6"); staggering end laps 304.8 mm (12") minimum.
- .5 Maintain approximately 10 mm (3/8") flow-out of bitumen at overlapping seams.
- .6 Roll or trowel seam.
- .7 Carry membrane 4" above top of cant strip.
- .8 Re-roll opposite end of roll not torched, and install in the same manner.
- .9 Mechanically fasten headlaps on slopes over 1:16 (3/4" in 12")
CAP FLASHING
- .1 Torch Armourplast pre-flashing form 100 mm (4") from toe of cant to 100 mm (4") above cant.
- .2 Torch membrane flashings over the roofing membrane from 150 mm (6") from toe of cant to minimum 200 mm (8") above roof systems surface.
- .3 Lap sides minimum 88.9 mm (3-1/2").
- .4 Ensure bitumen flow-out of approximately 10 mm (3/8").
- .5 Use round-nose heated trowel to blend in laps and seams, being sure to trowel in any voids.
