.3 Qualification of Workers: Employ skilled applicators approved by membrane manufacturer.
.3 Independent Inspection: (Preferred Wording)

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

1.6 FIELD CONDITIONS
.1 Ambient Conditions:
1. Apply Butyl membrane only when surfaces and ambient temperatures are within manufacturers' prescribed limits.
2. Do not install Butyl membrane when air and substrate temperature remains below [5 degrees C] [in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations] or when wind chill gives equivalent cooling effect.
3. Install Butyl membrane on dry substrate, free of snow and ice. Use only dry materials and apply only during weather that will not introduce moisture into system.
1.7 GUARANTEE and WARRANTY
.1 For Work of this Section [07 53 23] - Butyl Sheet Waterproofing] Provide the RCABC Guarantee Corp. (RGC) Standard Five [5] year Waterproofing Guarantee.

Part 2 Products description - Roofing System
.1 Butyl Sheet Waterproofing Membrane): to [ASTM D6134-07] [___] Type 1, Class A, 1.6 mm thick, non-reinforced membrane for use in fully adhered and protected system.
2.1 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
.1 Compatibility between components of system and adjacent materials is essential.
.1 Provide a written declaration to [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___] stating that all materials and components, as assembled in system, meet this requirement.
2.2 DECK COVERING - STEEL DECK
.1 Gypsum board: ASTM C1177/C1177M-[01], Glass Mat Gypsum Substrate for Use as Sheathing, [12.7] [15.9] mm thick] [thickness as indicated] or Fibre-mat reinforced cement board to ASTM C1325-04 [Non-Asbestos] [9.5] [12.7] mm thick.

2.8 BALLAST and WEARING COURSES

.3 Paving slabs: to [CSA A231.1], [[___] x [___] x [___] mm thick] [of sizes indicated] [natural] [exposed aggregate] [integral coloured] [air entrained] precast concrete paving slabs [having non-slip finish with [51] [___] mm plain margin around perimeter] [___].
.4 [Unit masonry] brick, tile or stone placed on sand and or gravel beds [compliant with RoofStar guarantee standard E11] require moisture monitoring sensor grid on top of the waterproofing membrane in order to locate breaches in membranes. [Refer to 1.5.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE]
.5 [Solid Wearing Courses] cast-in place concrete protection slabs [split-slab] and asphalt paving wearing courses [inaccessible wearing courses] shall be [compliant with RoofStar guarantee standard E11], incorporate surface score lines [indents]. Score lines shall be straight edged grid patterns [squares, rectangles, diamonds, etc.] to facilitate cutting. Indents shall be spaced at a maximum of [2 metres] apart in any direction.
2.9 GEOSYNTHETIC DRAINAGE CORES AND GEOCOMPOSITES
.1 Molded [dimpled] [woven] plastic grids, a minimum of [9.5 mm (3/8") thick] or greater [CCMC Listing No. _____] shall provide uniform support and traffic-bearing properties for overburdens and wearing courses. Geosynthetic drainage cores and geocomposites with factory laminated filter fabric accepted and listed by RoofStar Guarantee Program.
2.10 PROTECTION MAT
.1 Non woven polypropylene needle punched felt.
2.11 PAVER PEDESTALS
.1 Pedestals and levelling plates made of high density [polyethylene] [polypropylene] [with integral spacer ribs on upper surface].
2.12 ADHESIVES, TAPES AND PRIMERS
.1 Adhesive, tapes and primers, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
2.13 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL
.1 Provide laboratory test reports certifying compliance of roofing materials with specification requirements as described in PART 1, SUBMITTALS/QUALITY CONTROL.
Part 3 Products description - Waterproofing System
.1 Butyl elastomeric membrane consisting of: [reinforced] [non-reinforced] membrane for use in [protected] [fully adhered] system.
.2 Vulcanized Butyl Rubber Sheet used in Waterproofing Systems conforming to ASTM D 6134-07. Water vapour permeance max, perms m/pasm² - 0.14 (0.0025)
Part 4 Execution
4.1 QUALITY OF WORK
.1 Compliance: comply with manufacturer's written recommendations, including product technical bulletins, handling, storage and installation instructions, and datasheets.
.2 Do examination, preparation and roofing Work in accordance with [Roofing Manufacturer's Specification Manual] [and] [[RCABC Roofing Practices Manual].
4.2 SUBSTRATE EXAMINATION
.1 Verification of Conditions: examine substrates and immediately inform [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___] in writing of defects.
.2 Evaluation and Assessment: prior to beginning work ensure:
.1 Substrates are firm, straight, smooth, dry, free of snow, ice or frost, and swept clean of dust and debris.
.2 Curbs have been built.
.3 Drains have been installed at proper elevations relative to finished surfaces.
.4 Plywood and lumber nailer plates have been installed to walls and parapets as indicated.
4.3 PROTECTION OF IN-PLACE CONDITIONS
.1 Cover walls, walks [, sloped roofs] [___] and adjacent work where materials hoisted or used.
.2 Use warning signs and barriers:
1. Maintain in good order until completion of Work.
2. Dispose of rain water away from face of building until drains or hoppers installed and connected.
.3 Protect from traffic and damage:
1. Comply with precautions deemed necessary by [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___].
.4 Place plywood runways over work to enable movement of material and other traffic.
.5 At end of each day's work or when stoppage occurs due to inclement weather, provide protection for completed Work and materials out of storage.
.6 Seal and ballast exposed edges.
.7 If metal connectors used, treat connectors and decking with rust proofing or galvanization.
4.4 DECK SHEATHING (STEEL DECK)
.1 Gypsum board: ASTM C1177/C1177M-[01], Glass Mat Gypsum Substrate for Use as Sheathing, [12.7] [15.9] mm thick] [thickness as indicated] or Fibre-mat reinforced cement board to ASTM C1325-04 [Non-Asbestos] [9.5] [12.7] mm thick installed to RoofStar guarantee standards E Waterproofing.
.2 EcoLogo certified.
.3 Recycled content:
.1 Contain minimum [10] % by weight of recycled material in core of finished product.
.2 Contain minimum [20] % by weight of FGD gypsum and [5] % by weight of recycled material in core.
4.5 PROTECTED MEMBRANE WATERPROOFING APPLICATION
.1 Membrane, adhered application:
.1 Position membrane over substrate starting at highest point.
.2 Overlap sheets 100 mm minimum.
.3 Allow membrane to relax for 1/2 hour.
.4 Apply adhesive to membrane and substrate in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions.
.5 Do not apply adhesive to splice area.
.2 Insulation application:
.1 Insulation to be loose laid in parallel rows with ends staggered.
.2 Where insulation is in contact with cants bevel insulation edges to fit snug to cant slope.
.3 Flashings:
.1 Install Butyl membrane flashings in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions.
.4 Penetrations:
.1 Install drain pans, vent stack covers and other penetration flashings and seal to membrane in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and details.
.5 Filter fabric application:
.1 Apply fabric unbonded over installed insulation.
.2 Overlap edges 300 mm minimum.
.3 Cut fabric around drains, vents and other penetrations and extend under metal flashings.
4.6 BALLAST AND PROTECTIVE COVERING
.1 Apply stone ballast, as soon as possible after placement of [fabric] [insulation], at minimum rate of [75] [___] kg/m2.
.2 Spread stone ballast to an even thickness over entire area.
.3 Spread additional stone ballast around perimeter for width of 1200 mm to increase ballast weight to [___] kg/m2.
.4 Install paving slabs over fabric on paver levelling pads. Allow slight space between slabs to permit drainage of surface water. Shim up as required to obtain smooth surface transition from slab to slab.
4.7 GEOSYNTHETIC DRAINAGE CORES AND GEOCOMPOSITES
.1 Molded (dimpled) or woven plastic grids, a minimum of 9.5 mm (3/8") thick or greater to provide uniform support as well as traffic-bearing properties for overburdens and wearing courses. Geosynthetic drainage cores and geocomposites with factory laminated filter fabric accepted and listed by RoofStar Guarantee Program.
4.8 CLEANING
.1 Clean Work in accordance with Section [01 74 11 - Cleaning] [___].
.2 Clean to [Departmental Representative's] [Engineer's] [Consultant's] [___] approval, soiled surfaces, spatters, and damage caused by Work of this Section.
.3 Check drains to ensure cleanliness and proper function, and remove debris, equipment and excess material from site.
.4 Waste Management: separate waste materials for [reuse] [and] [recycling] [___] in accordance with Section [01 74 21 - Construction/Demolition Waste Management and Disposal] [01 35 21 - LEED Requirements] [___].
.1 Collect, package and store Butyl membrane cut-offs and waste material for recycling, and return to recycler in accordance with Waste Management Plan.
.2 Plan and co-ordinate insulation work to minimize generation waste.
.3 Give preference to suppliers who take back mineral fibre insulation waste for reuse or recycling.
.4 Place used hazardous sealant tubes, adhesive containers and materials defined as hazardous or toxic in designated containers.
.5 Clearly label location of salvaged material's storage areas and provide barriers and security devices.
.6 Ensure emptied containers are sealed and stored safely.
.7 Divert unused aggregate materials from landfill to local [quarry] [facility] [___] for reuse as reviewed by [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___].
.8 Unused [paint] [coating] [___] material must be disposed of at official hazardous material collections site as reviewed by [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___].
.9 Unused adhesive, sealant and [___] materials must not be disposed of into sewer system, into streams, lakes, onto ground or in other location where it will pose health or environmental hazard.
.10 Dispose of unused adhesive material at official hazardous material collections site approved by [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___].
.11 Dispose of unused sealant material at official hazardous material collections site approved by [Departmental Representative] [Engineer] [Consultant] [___].
