NOTE: All hot asphalt-adhered asphaltic membranes (built-up roofing, modified bitumen, etc.) require an insulation overlay over heat sensitive insulations and heat insensitive foamed insulation. RGC Guarantee Standards for heat sensitive insulations require a two-layer overlay board for a five (5) or ten (10) year Guarantee. RGC requires the use of a two-layer overlay board over heat sensitive insulations in all cases, and also requires a single-layer overlay board application over heat insensitive insulations for all hot asphalt-adhered membranes. For single-ply, non-asphaltic membrane roofing systems, the membrane manufacturer should be consulted for proprietary options.

Retro-Fit Board is a perlite-based utility board for use as a divorcing layer in reroofing and in new construction as a top layer in a multi-layer insulation system.

Half-inch Retro-Fit Board is a high density board made of expanded perlite and cellulosic fibres. It serves as an upgrade for wood fibre utility roofing products. The perlite particles are subjected to intense heat, which causes them to expand approximately fifteen times their original size.

The top surface is sealed with Top-Loc coating to ensure good attachment in bituminous applications. The minimum recycled content is 35% by weight.

DESCRIPTION

Invinsa™ Roof Board is a resilient, lightweight roof board designed as an integral component of the roof system, providing a protective layer for the insulation, while working with the membrane above to ensure maximum performance and longevity.

This patent-pending, high-density polyisocyanurate technology is bonded in-line to mineral-surfaced, fiber glass reinforced facers. In single ply and bituminous cold-applied and self-adhered roof systems, Invinsa enhances fire, water and hail resistance, and it will not support mold growth.

The roofing assembly / material information published in the RCABC Roofing Practices Manual does NOT represent a complete set of the manufacturer’s data or specifications. The preparation of a detailed specification is the responsibility of the design authority.

Code Approvals and Testing

Invinsa has been tested according to the requirements of ASTM C 209, C 473, C 518, C 1289, D 1037, D 1621, D 2126, D 3273 and E 96. It has been classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. as an approved cover board for certain Class “A” fire-rated roof constructions. It can be used in numerous FM Global 1A-90 or above roof constructions.

Use

Invinsa optimizes roof system performance in new, re-cover and re-roof applications. It can be installed over an existing roof to increase the integrity of the new roof. The coated fiber glass facers provide strong, smooth surfaces suitable for mechanically attached or fully adhered membranes, without the need for priming.

Advantages

* Invinsa’s light weight offers labour and installation efficiencies and allows more options for situations where the overall weight is a concern.

* Light weight also means easy hoisting, staging and manoeuvring around the roof.

* High impact and flexural strength provide increased resistance to damage from various sources, including but not limited to hail, foot traffic, construction loads and normal roof maintenance.

* Low water absorption characteristics offer performance benefits in diverse environments.

* JM Invinsa roof board is user friendly, allowing easy and efficient scoring, cutting and snapping, which permits fast, tight fabrication around roof penetrations.

* Board composition provides a low dust environment and smooth surface for better adhesion.

* Flexibility means less breakage during handling, and in re-cover applications it allows Invinsa to accommodate minor irregularities in existing roofs.

NOTE: All hot asphalt-adhered asphaltic membranes (built-up roofing, modified bitumen, etc.) require an insulation overlay over heat sensitive insulations and heat resistant foam insulation. '''''RoofStar Guarantee Standards''''' for heat sensitive insulation materials require a two-layer overlay board for a '''RoofStar Roofing Practices Manual''' for a '''''RoofStar 5-Year Roofing Guarantee''''', '''''RoofStar 10-Year Roofing Guarantee''''', or a '''''RoofStar 5-Year Waterproofing Guarantee'''''. The '''''RoofStar Guarantee Program''''' requires the use of a two-layer overlay board over heat sensitive insulation in all cases, and also requires a single-layer overlay board application over heat insensitive insulation for all hot asphalt-adhered membranes. For single-ply, non-asphaltic membrane roofing systems, the membrane manufacturer should be consulted for proprietary options.

Product Group: SOPRASMART BOARD 180

Country of Origin: Canada

Country of Manufacture: Canada

DESCRIPTION

The roofing assembly / material information published in the RCABC Roofing Practices Manual does NOT represent a complete set of the manufacturer's data or specifications. The preparation of a detailed specification is the responsibility of the design authority.

Soprasmart Board 180 is a high density composite panel composed of a non-woven polyester reinforced membrane, {{hilite | available with either a thermofusible or sanded surface || 2015-October-20 }}, laminated on a semi-rigid asphaltic board (Sopraboard). The base sheet is offset from the board on two adjacent edges (1 inch on one end and 3-1/2 inches on 1 side) to provide shiplap; other edges are square. To ensure a secure installation, the side lap is made with a patented DUO-SELVEDGE unique to Soprema (60% self-adhesive and 40% thermofusible). Its self-adhesive component protects combustible surfaces and its thermofusible properties provide an efficient seal. End laps can be aligned then sealed by heat welding a minimum 12" wide membrane reinforcing strip centered over the end lap. Soprasmart Board 180 can be mechanically fastened, adhered with Duotack adhesive, or with a full coat of hot bitumen.

Soprasmart Board 180 can be used for the following applications:

* an overlay board and base sheet on all types of insulation

* a recovery board and base sheet on existing roofing

DESCRIPTION

Firestone ISOGARD™ HD Cover Board is a half-inch (12.7 mm) thick polyiso insulation designed for use as a cover board. It is a high density, closed-cell, polyisocyanurate foam core that has been manufactured with a coated glass facer. Firestone ISOGARD™ HD provides the highest thermal performance when compared to other half-inch roof cover boards.

All Firestone polyisocyanurate insulations use EPA accepted blowing agents. Firestone ISOGARD™ HD with IsoGard™ Foam Technology incorporates a HCFC-free blowing agent that does not contribute to the depletion of the ozone (ODP-free).

Division E - General Information

Insulation Joints and Overlays

NOTICE TO READER: This is an information page only. To read the standards applicable to a particular Waterproofing or Water-shedding System, refer to the actual Standard located in Division B.

General

Insulation overlays are used to separate the roof membrane from the primary insulation, usually for one of two reasons:

 • to prevent the insulation from affecting the performance of the roof membrane
 • to prevent the roof membrane and / or the method of application from affecting the insulation

The insulation can affect the performance of the roof membrane in the following ways:

 • the insulation may be incompatible with the membrane, resulting in a loss of physical properties
 • different coefficients of thermal expansion may result in membrane splits / cracks.

The roof membrane and / or the method of application can affect the insulation in the following ways:

 • the insulation may not be capable of withstanding asphalt application temperatures and may “burn-out”
 • some insulation materials will not accommodate direct torch-applied membranes
 • insulation materials that are too “soft” may result in delamination or damage to the membrane or insulation when exposed to heavy loads or traffic
 • the solvents and adhesives used for flexible membranes may adversely affect the insulation.

NOTE: All hot asphalt-adhered asphaltic membranes (built-up roofing, modified bitumen, etc.) require an insulation overlay over heat sensitive insulations and heat resistant foam insulation. RoofStar Guarantee Standards for heat sensitive insulation materials require a two-layer overlay board for a RoofStar Roofing Practices Manual for a RoofStar 5-Year Roofing Guarantee, RoofStar 10-Year Roofing Guarantee, or a RoofStar 5-Year Waterproofing Guarantee. The RoofStar Guarantee Program requires the use of a two-layer overlay board over heat sensitive insulation in all cases, and also requires a single-layer overlay board application over heat insensitive insulation for all hot asphalt-adhered membranes. For single-ply, non-asphaltic membrane roofing systems, the membrane manufacturer should be consulted for proprietary options.

Insulation Joint Tape

Where the RoofStar Guarantee Standards or the roof system specifications call for taping fibreboard or insulation joints, consult the list of Accepted Materials: Insulation Joint Tape section of this Manual.
