Bituminous roofing membranes modified with styrene butadiene styrene ("SBS") or attactic polypropylene ("APP") that are newly accepted by the RCABC Guarantee Corp. ("RGC") are governed by RGC Acceptance Criteria RGC ACWP-MOD (applicable to membranes accepted after July 1, 2023). The CSA Standard for these membranes, CSA A123.23 "Product specification for polymer modified
bitumen sheet, prefabricated and reinforced", forms the backbone of the RGC Acceptance Criteria and has replaced the older CGSB Standard CGSB 37-GP-56M, which was first published in 1980 and last revised in 1985 (withdrawn in 2013).
On March 8, 2024, the 2024 Edition of the "British Columbia Building Code" was published, removing reference to CGSB 37-GP-56M in Part 5 and requiring that all polymer-modified bituminous roofing membranes used in the Province of British Columbia conform to CSA standard A123.23 (See Table 5.9.1.1.. The CSA A123.23 Standard is also published in the National Building Code of Canada (2020), Part 5, Table 5.9.1.1..
Not all SBS and APP polymer-modified membranes accepted by the RGC prior to July 1, 2023 publish technical data sheets that align with the newer CSA Standard. While the RGC provides technical sheets for viewing in the Roofing Practices Manual, not all may be current or even conforming to the standards they purport to align with. Therefore, the reader must validate this information independently of the RGC, to the reader's own satisfaction.
