Notice to Reader
Images used in a Construction Detail are representative and not prescriptive, and are not necessarily drawn to scale. They are intended to support the related Standard (Ref. Division A, Article 2.2.1.2.).

The reader may link to the related Article in the detail title, or link to the Standard as it relates to a specific element in the detail. All hyperlinks are displayed blue text.

SBS Details

1 WORK INCLUDED

(1) Base sheet membrane flashing
On standard parapets (609.6 mm (24”) or less in height), install continuous base membrane flashing, from the roof field to outer face of the parapet top. The machine direction of the membrane shall be oriented vertically. Carry membrane flashing in one piece over the top and down the exterior face as required in Article 10.3.2.3.
An alternative method of flashing for may be used (see Drawing (3C)) and is permissible only if allowed in writing by the manufacturer. Refer to the Standard for specific requirements.
Note the minimum height requirement for parapets (127 mm (5”)), illustrated in Drawing (A).
(2) Cap sheet membrane flashing
Installed as required in Part 10 and applied as the second or third of a multi-ply membrane system, providing required coverage above the finished roof system surface. The three illustrated colours in Drawing (1) indicate various permissible methods, depending upon the manufacturer's published requirements:
Option A: Cap sheet membrane flashing terminated at the top inside edge of the parapet.
Option B: Cap sheet membrane flashing carried onto parapet top surface at least 50.8 mm (2”).
Option C: Cap sheet membrane flashing completely covering top surface of parapet, terminated at outside edge.
Parapet in Drawing (A) illustrates the lowest permissible height (127 mm (5”)). Note that for parapets with an inside face height up to 203.2 mm (8”), no fewer than two plies of sheet membrane flashing must cover the inside face of the parapet.
When the parapet height (measured on the inside face) exceeds 203.2 mm (8”) (Ref. Drawings (C) and (D)), no fewer than two plies of sheet membrane flashing shall be carried up at least 203.2 mm above the finished roof system surface.
(3) Metal Cap Flashing
Designed and installed as required in Part 13 and secured on the outside face with a metal cleat (see Article 13.3.2.1., “General Requirements for Linear Metal Flashings”). Gasketed screw fasteners shown on the inside face of the flashing.
(4) Securement cleat
Ref. Drawing (A).
(5) Counter-flashing
Required if membrane on inside surface of parapet is not protected from UV light (granule-surfaced membrane is considered UV resistant; Ref. Drawing (B)). The illustrated flashing underlaps the cap flashing and is secured to the inside face of the parapet with S-locked seams and additional gasketed fasteners; all fasteners must be located at least 88.9 mm (3-1/2”) above the finished roof system surface. Counter-flashing may be removed for future sheet membrane renewal.
(6) Machine direction
Membrane oriented in the direction of manufacturing.

NOTE: See the Standard for additional requirements.
