Waterproofing Plazas, Promenades and Terraces

The Roofing Practices Manual defines "Waterproofing" as the treatment of surfaces or structures in order to prevent the passage of water under hydrostatic pressure. Typically, then, these surfaces are horizontal but are not a roof per se (though they may serve as a roof to, say, a parking garage, their primary function is a surface intended for human access). By contrast, roofing systems waterproof a roof surface or repel water from intrusion into a building not caused by hydrostatic pressure; roofs also provide limited access to human traffic, though there are exceptions.
