1.1 GENERAL

The roofing assembly / material information published by the RoofStar Roofing Practices Manual does NOT represent a complete set of the manufacturer's published data, nor does it represent a detailed specification. The preparation of a detailed specification is the responsibility of the design authority.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

GMX Hot-Applied Waterproofing is a premium grade waterproofing adhesive with superior adhesion characteristics, excellent low temperature flexibility and an unusually high softening point and penetration index. When used in conjunction with HPR Polyscrim Plus® Hot Applied Polyester, it forms a waterproofing system with superior tensile strength and elongation properties.

GMX Hot-Applied Waterproofing:

  • Exhibits superior flexibility in low temperature applications
  • Will not run or sag in warm weather applications
  • Has superior waterproofing characteristics
  • Exhibits excellent elongation and recovery properties
  • Results in a superior, predictable application

Garland Hot-Applied Waterproofing has performance characteristics greatly superior to conventional mopping asphalt. It can be applied over a wide range of temperatures. The addition of rubber elastomers enables the membrane to adapt to the stress levels inherent in concrete slabs while continuing to provide excellent waterproofing, puncture and abrasion resistance. Standard mopping asphalt begins to harden and degrade as soon as it is applied.

Garland Hot-Applied Waterproofing stays flexible indefinitely in a protected membrane environment. The addition of SEBS rubber to the asphalt increases the tensile strength and elongation properties of the waterproofing membrane. Garland Hot-Applied waterproofing is designed for use as the waterproofing layer and bonding adhesive for the Garland Hot-Applied Waterproofing system. This is an ideal waterproofing system for horizontal waterproofing applications. Garland Hot-Applied Waterproofing used with polyester fabric reinforcement will produce a waterproofing system with exceptional tear, tensile and puncture resistance. Typical applications include waterproofing of basement slabs, plaza decks, parking decks, mechanical equipment rooms, below grade walls, planters and other sub-grade construction.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

.1 Do not apply roofing insulation or membrane to damp deck surface.
.2 Do not expose materials subject to water or solar damage in quantities greater than can be weatherproofed during same day.

1.3 EXECUTION

PREPARATION

.1 Wateproofing materials shall not be applied during inclement weather and the installation shall not proceed in the event that precipitation is probable during application.
.2 Coatings shall be stored at room temperature until immediately prior to use when the ambient temperature is 40° F. or below, including wind chill. Discontinue the application of coatings if the material can not be stored at temperatures which permit even distribution during application.
.3 When applying materials with spray equipment, take precautions to prevent overspray from damaging or defacing surrounding walls, building surfaces, vehicles or other property.
.4 Avoid inhaling spray mist; take precautions to ensure adequate ventilation.
.5 The completed roof system must be protected from foot traffic until fully cured.
.6 The substrate must be structurally sound. Surfaces to be waterproofed should be swept, dry, reasonably smooth and free of dust, dirt, voids, cracks, sharp projections, oil and grease Cracks in excess of 1/16" wide should be reinforced with polyester fabric during the application of the primary waterproofing system.
.7 The application surface should be primed with Garla-Prime® Quick Drying Primer at a rate of one gallon per 100 sq. ft. Reinforce inside and outside corners, cracks, and construction joints with a minimum 6 inch wide piece of polyester fabric embedded in the waterproofing membrane.
.8 Flash large cracks, expansion joints and similar details as per the recommendation outlined in the current edition of the N.R.C.A. manual.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTION ONE AND TWO-PLY SYSTEM

A. Optional: Apply Garla-Prime® Primer over the roof surface at a rate of one to one and one half (1.0-1.5) gallons per 100 sq. ft. Permit the primer to dry completely before installing the roof system.
B. Membrane installation shall begin at the low end of the deck. Apply Garlastic KM® or Garlastic KM Plus Hot Applied Asphalt at a rate of 60 lbs. per 100 sq. ft.
C. HPR Polyscrim Plus® Hot Applied Polyester Plus Fabric is to be embedded in the asphalt in a ribbon 44-46 inches wide at the rate of approximately 40 lbs. per 100 sq. ft. The roof surface must be completely covered to insure full adhesion of the polyester fabric. Embed a full width roll of HPR Polyscrim Plus® Hot-Applied Polyester into the asphalt and brush firmly into place. Optional three layers of Polyscrim Plus® Hot-Applied Polyester can be applied.
D. Glaze coat with an additional layer of Garlastic KM® or Garlastic KM Plus at a rate of fifteen (15) lbs. per 100 sq. ft. Squeegee apply the SEBS Asphalt to ensure a smooth, coated surface. Continue across the field of the roof in a similar fashion lapping each successive full width roll of polyester fabric a minimum of six (6) inches.
E. Install the membrane system up onto the vertical flashing surfaces restored as outlined previously in the specification.
F. Allow the system to cure until it is tack free and will support foot traffic without deformation.
