The problems resulting from the presence of condensation represent one of the major causes of damage to the structure and fabric of old and modern buildings alike. They are, therefore, of great importance to the specifier in his design role. The increased use of insulation and modern roof construction methods have created further major condensation risks within the roof void.
The specifier must ensure that the risk of condensation is minimised by ensuring the correct design, suitable ventilation in accordance with the B.C. Building Code, and specification of the most suitable underlay.
RoofStar-guaranteed metal roofing systems require a suitable underlay to ensure that any moisture produced by condensation is not introduced into the roofing system components or the structure of the building. Modified bituminous membranes that are not arranged under insulation must have a high softening point bitumen with a minimum flow temperature of 87.7°C (190°F) to prevent material displacement from heat transfer through metal panels during high temperature days. (See UNDERLAYMENT - Eave and Detail Protection (ASM Roof Systems)). All accepted modified bituminous self-adhesive membranes listed exceed a minimum flow temperature of 87.7°C (190°F.).
Accepted No. 30 Asphalt felt or RoofStar-accepted proprietary synthetic underlayments that meet or exceed the CSA A123.3 standards for No. 30 Asphalt Felt are acceptable for use on uninsulated wood decks sloped over 4" in 12". Manufacturer's limitations are to be followed.
For RoofStar-accepted No. 30 asphalt felts refer to BUR Felts in the Accepted Materials section of this Manual.
